Swim Lessons

Class Descriptions

Swim Starters focuses on developing swim readiness skills through fun and confidence-building experiences for children ages six months to three years. Parents also learn how to supervise children in the water, how to prevent accidents and how to plan for emergencies. This class requires the guardian to get in the water with the swim starter.

Swim Basics develops personal water safety and basic swimming skills. Swimmers develop a high level of comfort in the water by practicing safe water habits, engaging in underwater exploration, and learning how to swim to safety and exit if they fall into a body of water.

Swim Strokes introduces and refines stroke technique. Having mastered the fundamentals, students learn additional water safety skills, build stroke technique, and develop skills that prevent chronic disease, increase social-emotional and cognitive well-being and foster a lifetime of physical activity.

The YMCA of Parkersburg offers private swim lessons for all ages and abilities. Knowing how to swim and be safe around water is one of the most important skills a person can learn. To someone unfamiliar with being in the water, going to the beach or a pool can be an uncomfortable, stressful, and or embarrassing experience. Our private swim lessons open up a vast array of opportunities to stay fit, develop self-confidence, and safely enjoy outdoor aquatic activities like snorkeling, surfing, river rafting and more. It’s never too late to learn!
