April Trainer of the Month - Crystal Leonard
The YMCA of Parkersburg's Trainer of the Month is designed to help you get to know the trainers that help make our Y community great. This month, we’re introducing Crystal Leonard who is our Health and Fitness Coordinator, and instructs a variety of our group fitness classes. Get to know Crystal by reading her story below.
1. Please tell us a little bit about yourself: what are some fun facts about you?
In my high school years, I was a Varsity Cheerleader for Wirt Co. High School. In college, I was part of the theatre program and had participated in a play at The Greenbrier Hotel.
2. What fitness class/classes do you instruct?
The main classes I instruct are Pilates, Step Aerobics, Strong, and Silver Sneakers. Also, I have certifications in other classes that I do not currently teach.
3. When and why did you become a trainer? What's your style of training?
I became an instructor in 2011 because I enjoy fitness-related activities, and thought: “Why not get paid for doing what I love?”
My training style varies from day to day. Sometimes, I may go easier while on other days, I challenge everyone to push their limits. I always provide proper breathing tips and give modifications so that everyone can participate at their own level.
4. Tell us a bit about the classes you instruct.
Pilates focuses on building core strength.
Step Aerobics is a fun, cardio class using the step bench.
Strong strengthens and tones the entire body.
Silver Sneakers is a slower-paced fitness class using a chair if needed for support. It’s an excellent class for beginners and active older adults.
5. What is your favorite part about instructing at the Y? Favorite part about the Y?
My favorite part of the Y is the people I have met along the way. I also love knowing that I am helping others to stay active and healthy.
