February Trainer of the Month

The YMCA of Parkersburg's Trainer of the Month is designed to help you get to know the trainers that help make our Y community great. This month, we’re introducing Kim Stone. Kim has been teaching our Monday and Wednesday evening Strength classes Let’s get to know her:

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself: what are some fun facts about you?
I've been teaching at the Y for 15 years. I'm also a substitute teacher for Wood Co. I grew up in Athens and I've lived in Parkersburg for 25 years. I remember that one of the first things my husband and I did when we moved here was becoming Y Members!

2. What fitness class do you instruct?
Currently, I teach the Strength class on Monday and Wednesday at 4:30. I teach from a program/training that I received from MOSSA three years ago. My class uses free weights choreographed to music and gets every muscle group with a little cardio in an hour. Very effective and motivating!

3. When and why did you become a trainer? What's your style of training?
I became a trainer by accident. The step teacher had to leave the class I was in and asked me to take over. What keeps me teaching is the accountability and encouraging setting that a class provides.

4. Tell us a little bit about the fitness class that you instruct.
The MOSSA program that I was trained in stands for MOVE, put into motion, excite, and stir. We accomplish this in 1 hour with the size weights the participant chooses. The class routine stays the same for 3 months giving participants an opportunity to grow in the given moves and get stronger and lift with more confidence. Each muscle group lasts about 3-4 min. in the training hour and MOSSA is great about incorporating movements you execute outside in your everyday life to prevent injuries in the future. All ages are welcome!

5. What is your most favorite part about instructing at the YMCA of Parkersburg and why?
I love how the Y is a platform for sharing with others, motivating one another, and connecting through movement. It's like recess time for adults and the instructor gets to share a fun game that will make everyone feeling happy and accomplished!
