January 2022 Instructor of the Month - Jordan Thornhill
The YMCA of Parkersburg's Instructor of the Month is designed to help you get to know the instructors that help make our Y community great, from our swim instructors to the coaches of our various programs. This month, we’re introducing Jordan Thornhill. Jordan, owner of In Step Coaching, began partnering with us in 2020 to offer youth basketball programs at the Y. His most recent endeavor is a youth basketball league beginning January 8th! Let’s get to know Jordan:
1. Tell us a little bit about yourself: what are some fun facts about you?
I love doing anything that challenges me to grow inside and out. If I’m not learning or pushing myself in some form physically, mentally or spiritually its a struggle! Basically I’m uncomfortable being comfortable. I also love to compete and play games (sports, board game, and anything in between).
2. What to you teach at the YMCA of Parkersburg? Tell us a little bit about it.
I teach Basketball sessions along with the performance side of sports (strength, speed & agility). I also love working with athletes on their mindsets and lifestyle. I love to do anything that helps them grow as an athlete inside and out.
3. When and why did you become an instructor? What's your teaching style?
I knew I wanted to coach even as a youngster in school. I always had a love for leading when it came to sports. I feel God has put so many wonderful experiences in my life growing up that I truly feel I’m in my purpose by connecting with athletes through sport. My teaching style is having a lot of joy in the environment but also competing to your fullest. Loose, but disciplined. Striking balance between providing instruction but allowing them to make as many of their own choices as possible. The sweet spot for coaching is allowing the athlete to “figure it out” on their own.
5. What is your most favorite part of teaching at the YMCA of Parkersburg?
Teaching at the Y has been a blast because our missions are very much in alignment by using Christian principles in our teachings. My faith is the most important thing in my life, and I love that I get to be open with it. The Y is always a joyful place as well. The people that work here are all good people who care about the people who come in. It’s a wonderful environment to be in.
