May Trainer of the Month - Roberta Green
The YMCA of Parkersburg's Trainer of the Month is designed to help you get to know the trainers that help make our Y community great. This month, we’re introducing Roberta Green. Roberta is one of the Y’s fantastic cycling trainers. Let’s get to know her:
1. Tell us a little bit about yourself: what are some fun facts about you?
I am from Denver, Colorado. While I’m a member (partner) at Shuman McCuskey & Slicer, a law firm in Charleston, I was a school teacher for 15 years before law school. Beyond group exercise instructor and personal trainer certifications, I am NETA trained in areas including weightlifting, barre, yoga, spin, and nutrition.
I participated in more than 70 races (5Ks, half and full marathons, triathlon, and cross- country events) before 2014, when I stopped competing with anyone other than myself! Three days a week, I swim with the same group of informal ‘master swimmers’ with whom I have swum for more than a decade. I am married to Hal Foss, who is a golf enthusiast.
I swam on teams as a child and lettered in tennis in high school. My father was a great volleyball player and also played football for University of Denver (when it still had a football team, instead of hockey). My sister inherited all his athletic ability.
2. What fitness class(es) do you instruct?
Each Tuesday/Thursday, at 5 am I teach Cycling. I gather with the same group of students/friends, along with new folk whom we assume are insomniacs. All kidding aside, we are a solid group of dedicated Y members. Join us!
3. When and why did you become a trainer? What's your style of training?
I enjoy challenging others and myself, but I hope I let everyone come in at their own level, and we work together from there.
4. Tell us a little bit about the fitness class(es) that you instruct.
The Cycling class consists of a diverse group of unlike-minded individuals with a keen affection for each other, spin bikes and the Y.
5. What is your most favorite part about instructing at the YMCA of Parkersburg and why?
The people. And probably the people…. And then don’t forget about the people. Y members are a dedicated, interested, interesting lot. I’m a fan.
