December 2025 Member of the Month - Gary Oplinger

Why is it important for you to be an active member at the YMCA?

Physical fitness is very important to me especially as I get older. I want to feel good both physically and mentally. I have grandchildren that are very active and I want to be involved and be able to attend all of their activities. I truly believe in the saying “a body in motion, stays in motion and a body at rest, stays at rest.”

What is your first memory of the YMCA?

I started coming to the YMCA 34 years ago. The staff was friendly and helpful, so I knew this was the place for me. Actually, I remember coming to the YMCA about 55 years ago and playing basketball outside on the Biddy Basketball Courts.

How has the YMCA impacted your life?

The YMCA has impacted my life in many ways. I have met so many new people and made lifelong friends that are very important to me. The YMCA has given me the opportunity to stay fit both mentally and physically and have fun doing it. This has enabled me to stay active and enjoy life that so many people are not able to do.

What should the community know about the YMCA of Parkersburg?

The community should know that if you come to the YMCA you will be welcomed by all. You will never be judged no matter what your level of fitness is or what you look like. You can come and be yourself and feel very comfortable at all times.

How have you witnessed the YMCA mission in action?
YMCA Mission:
To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.

I personally just come and do my own workout program. However, I have heard that all the programs offered are really good. The YMCA has so much to offer like summer camp, child care, fitness classes, full size pool, personal training, basketball courts and many more.

What is something you are proud of from the last year?

I am proud to be a members of the North Parkersburg Baptist Church and get to participate in different ministries to help others and honor Jesus. I am also thankful to be a part of a group, Parkersburg High School Alumni for Athletics to raise money to help support all athletic teams and extracurricular groups at PHS.
